This morning 4 awesome FiAs (more provided support in the form of running partners, babysitting and coaching) volunteered for the Girls on the Run 5k! If you aren’t familiar with the organization, it is a 10 week program for girls in 3rd to 5th grade. One of the goals of the program (from their website) “inspire girls to define their lives on their own terms”. The culmination of the program is to run a 5k with their classmates and a running partner. Something we noticed, which I thought was a really cool idea, all the race bibs were number 1. They were all winners because they came out and did their best (Could that be anymore FiA?!?! Being number one no matter what, just because you had the courage to try).
All of us were assigned as Course Marshals, which meant we were assigned different points of the race and given cow bells to encourage the runners (also provide direction…so that went well ha). It was so wonderful to see all these young girls taking on the challenge of running a whole 3.1 miles. I hope the feeling they got from this race and all the encouragement along the way sticks with them for years to come. Maybe in a few years they will come to workout with us! Or even a mom might be motivated to join FiA and keep encouraging a healthy lifestyle for her family.
Favorite moment: Towards the end of the race a young girl was having a hard time finishing, so all of her teammates ran to get her. They surrounded her with love and chanting and encouragement as she finished the last 10th of a mile (talk about all the feels!!!!). They were definitely #BetterTogether Hope more can join us next time!
