TKD Inspired!

  • When: 05/01/2018

YHC recently started doing Tae Kwon Do, and in TKD class we spend a lot of time doing some of the same exercises we do in FIA: squats, high knees, mountain climbers, etc. After a satisfying Monday night at TKD, I was inspired to plan Tuesday’s workout around the mold of a TKD class.

Here’s what we did:

  • 1-minute meditation to reflect on our goals for our workout, or for life. (Closer, a few minutes late, was highly confused about this strange, stationary exercise).
  • Warmup (30 Jumping Jacks in Cadence)

Then we moved into a tabada routine, mimicking much of what I encounter in TKD Class:

  • Hold a Squat (aka, chum chum sagi or “horse riding stance”) and alternate punching with the right and left fist, followed by a light jog in place (45 seconds squat, 15 seconds jog x 5)
  • High Knee with arm pull-down (45 seconds on, 15 seconds rest x 5)
  • Cross-Leg Mountain Climbers (ie, knee brought to opposite elbow) (45 seconds on, 15 seconds rest x 5)
  • Jump over line back and forth followed by slow knee-ups with toes pointed (45 seconds hop, 15 seconds knee-up x 5)

The last exercise was a full body ordeal that I found in the video linked below. Hard to get the balance of it, but I found it really satisfying once you get in the swing of it. Fast forward to 19 min 30 seconds to see it properly in action. I’m definitely going to be incorporating this one again.

  • Left foot planted. Right foot, back lunge, Side lunge, back lunge, kick. (45 seconds on, 15 seconds rest x3)
  • Switch feet, do alternate side (45 seconds on, 15 seconds rest x3)

And done! We took the last few minutes to stretch (long extended crunches to start out with), before making our ways home.

Thanks for bearing with my little experiment.
