Devo: Matthew 10:16-25 can be quite alarming. Jesus is basically promising that His followers will have trouble and face persecution. Like sheep in the midst of wolves, being brought before hostile governing authorities, and being opposed by even our closest family members does not sound like the appropriate appendix to “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.”
What are we to make of the fact that we will encounter such suffering and persecution?
Well, above all we must remember that God does indeed love us and, in fact, has a wonderful plan for our life. We must never doubt His goodness, wisdom, or power. Furthermore, the text gives us a few more precious support beams that will stabilize us in such times.
First, we recognize that Jesus, our Master, was hated before us. Therefore we are identified as being ‘on His side.’ (v.24-25). Second, we cling to the assurance that, in the end, justice will not only be done but will be seen to be done (v.26-27). Third, we overcome our fear of man by maintaining a proper fear of God (v.28). Fourth, find encouragement in the fact that we will be received by some, and that those we receive us actually receive Christ! (v.40) Finally, we remember that rewards of eternity cannot fail, and will last for, well, eternity. (v.41-42).
What else can you see in this chapter to encourage you in those moments when the world attacks?
